‘A thing of beauty or looks are deceiving’ on Display at BCC

PITTSFIELD - “A thing of beauty or looks are deceiving” an exhibit by Joanne F. Desmond, will be on display in the Koussevitzky Art Gallery at Berkshire Community College (BCC) from Tuesday, October 9 through Friday, November 9.

Desmond states “Originally, I started out exploring those materials that are banal, utilitarian, overlooked, under-appreciated, taken for granted - turning them into objects that become attractive and acceptable. Things to be seen with new eyes .... by working on them, I discovered ways to incorporate worries, doubts, and fears - generated by my exploration of the materials and functionality of the act of sewing, beading, writing etc., into the objects at hand. The transformed " thing of beauty" now becomes an object that masks or hides a troubling personal secret code”.

Joanne Desmond received a BA in Art from the University of Mass/Boston with a concentration in printmaking and photography, a M.Ed in Arts & Learning from Endicott College, and a MFA from Mass College of Art & Design.

Desmond will discuss her exhibit Thursday, November 1 at 12:15 PM in K-111 on BCC’s main campus. Forum credit is available for BCC students attending this discussion.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery is located in BCC’s Koussevitzky Arts Center. Gallery hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
